Flat Panel TV - A Great Home Theater Component
By James Hayslip

High definition flat panel televisions now offer the ultimate viewing experience. The light weight thin cabinets are easily wall mounted, saving room space and the necessity to move furniture. A home theater environment can easily be arranged with a flat panel TV and just a few components for a surround sound system. The television networks now offer high definition on most channels to watch on these amazing screens. You might have to upgrade your cable or satellite service to get the new channels.

You will want the largest flat panel screen you can afford for your home theater. The large screen sizes come in two types, LCD and Plasma. Both offer a great high resolution picture, many with up to 1920x1080 at 16:9 aspect ratio. Plasma screens are the largest and come in sizes over 70 inches.

The cost has come down considerably in the last year. More money can be saves by shopping at a discount TV store. Plasma sets were the least expensive but they can occasionally suffer from gas leakage and burn-in causing images to remain on the screen. LCD screens do not have these problems and are steadily becoming less expensive. These high end televisions are rapidly approaching the price range of a larger majority of consumers due to advances in manufacturing and technology improvements.

While most sets are capable of 720p, the best display is rated 1080p. There is also the interlace rating. Most HDTV flat panel televisions sold today are capable of 1080i and at least 720i. Actually the interlace rating was developed by an RCA engineer and dates back to the 1930s. Which ever one you decide on will adequately display TV broadcast available today. The sharper displays just cost more.

You will need mounting brackets to install the flat panel TV on the wall. The Discount TV stores have them for a fraction of the retail cost. Choose the brand you have and check the part number noted in the instruction manual. For safety, be sure to get help mounting the TV on the wall.

You can also find HDMI and DVI cables for less at a discount TV store. These are required to connect DVD players and recorders to the flat panel TV. They seldom come with any of the component equipment. You do not need gold contacts but they will last longer and they seem to be more available.

You will find using a flat panel HDTV to be the greatest improvement to installing a home theater in your home. The crystal clear picture and new features will provide an easy installation and adaptation to your entertainment needs.
